Blog Post #17: Film Opening Storyboard

Image
Below are the first storyboards created for my 2 minute opening. Also included are any camera movement, type of shot, audio, location, etc Since I am planning to do a mix of live action and animation, I differentiated the shots with different shapes. Stars mean that the shot will be fully live action, half stars are a mix of live action and animated elements, circles are fully animated.  I tried to keep the coloring in my storyboards fairly dull as this is what I'm planning to do in both my animations and the live action portions.  There won't be much variety in my shot types since my whole film opening will take place in relatively small areas, but there will be a lot of movement which can be seen with the arrows in the storyboards. The arrows either represent zooming in, or the camera physically moving in that direction, depending on the shot.

Blog Post #16 Film Opening Screenplay

Image
Final Screenplay  Media Language      The highlighted portions in the screenplay are intentional choices for editing, sound, or camera techniques that help further the narrative or are conventions of the genre.  Reflect and Revise  I think the  glitch i ness  works well in my opening to keep a sense of mystery and suspense. I can hint at the conflict but not give away the entire plot of the film.  I think the hardest thing  to communicate  visually is the  relationship  between my two main characters. Especially since I  don’t  want to fully show them yet, showing their dynamic visually is difficult. One change I made after creating an  original draft was cutting down the length of the broadcast segment. I had planned in the beginning that the broadcast was going to take up around 70 percent of the opening because I wanted to show  a lot of visuals about what  specifically  the crisis  wa...

Blog Post #15 Film Opening Concept

Image
I created a rough guideline that would help me consolidate and fill in gaps for my pre-production planning including the purpose of my opening, what I plan to include, the conventions of my genre, etc. This will help me later as I create my storyboard and screenplay since I believe I worked out most of the kinks in planning and figured out things that I need to include that I hadn't thought of before.  Short Written Plan    Genre: Science Fiction with secondary thriller and drama elements (animated)    Target Audience: Younger audiences (16-30) that enjoy  retro  dystopian  mixe d genre sci-fi film s   Core idea:  People motivated to resolve undiscussed issues in their relationship after a space-related natural disaster  threatens to destroy the planet in less than 3 days.  People are isolated in their homes leaving no choice but to hash things out.    Tone: suspenseful, dramatic    Define the ...

Blog Post #14 Mood Board

Image
For this assignment, I created a set of mood boards that help demonstrate the vibe and important details that I will be including in my two minute film opening. Since I plan to animate the vast majority of my opening, many of my pictures are not real locations or people that I will use in my opening, they are more conceptual or things that I will use as inspiration or as a reference when animating. There are 8 mood boards that have different purposes       1. Character portraits (design): For my character designs, since the majority of my opening will be animated, I don't have portraits of actors that I will be using in my film. Instead, I put together a handful of characters and images from video games and comics that have a similar style and vibe to what I am hoping to achieve. Mainly, a semi-realistic style that is unnerving and uncanny. While I'm not trying to directly recreate the characters and art style, I am planning to design my characters and backgrou...

Blog Post #13 Target Audience Survey

Image
In order to get an idea of the target audience for my film opening, I created an audience survey on Google forms that specifically asked about preferences in Sci-Fi films. Also, many of my questions pertained to concepts that I was tied between or were about preferences in story telling. For example, in some of my very early planning I was stuck between a retro and futuristic setting for my film, so since I couldn't decide I made one of my questions a choice between whether audiences preferred a futuristic, retro, or present day setting within sci-fi films. Also, even though I'm doing animation, which is a very visual medium, I wanted to know how much audiences cared about storytelling through dialogue so I also included a question on whether viewers preferred a movie tell them verbally what is going on/how the characters feel or whether they want the film to show visually the emotions and meaning of the scene (or whether they have to preference or would rather a mix of both)....

Blog Post #12: Decoding Film Titles - "The Art of the Title"

Image
The Art of the Title     For this assignment, we were asked to analyze two film openings within the genre that we've chosen for our opening. The openings we chose needed to include a title sequence/opening credits. Once we picked our openings we watched it through once to get an overall impression and then a second time where we could rewind and analyze the choices made by the creators. After we analyzed the openings, we wrote 3 pieces that work together as a collective analysis comparing and contrasting the two openings.       The first essay needed to include how the film opening utilized  1. First impressions & pu...
