Sound Art Assignment
Sound Art Cafe
Assignment Summary
For this assignment, we worked in groups of four to create and compile the sound design for one of four prompts. The prompts we could choose from were "There's Something Out There (Horror/Suspense)", "Cafe in the Morning (Warm/Comforting)", "Starship Bridge (Sci-fi/Futuristic)", and "Witch's Cottage (Fantasy)" My group and I decided unanimously on Cafe in the Morning. The specific requirements for this were that at least four of the sound effects must be made with random objects, the rest of the sounds needed could consist of copyright free sound effects or music found online. The finished audio recording must be 45 to 60 seconds in length.
Description of Scene
We planned the order that we wanted the sounds to happen, we decided to follow a chronological order of what your would hear once you walk in and order at a busy coffee shop. We also decided which ones we would make in person and which we would source online

Foley Sounds
We made 7 Foley sounds for our project
Muffled Speech - Since we had free time in class and we knew we were going to need muffled speech/background noise, one of us stood near the back of the class and recorded the audio of people speaking in the class.
Mixing - to replicate the sound of drinks being mixed, we took a spoonful of sugar and mixed it into a glass full of coffee with a metal spoon.
Ice and water - We poured water into a glass full of ice and swirled it around to create the sound of cold drinks being shaken
Dialogue - We recorded one of our members saying "Order for Aiko" for the voice of a barista
Writing - We recorded the sound of writing to replicate the sound of someone working in the coffee shop
Page flipping - Similar to the writing, this sound was made to sound like someone flipping through a book, newspapers, or papers for work.
Coins - We dropped coins in the top of a glass jar to make the sound of coins being dropped into a tip jar.
Coffee Machine - We recorded the sound of my espresso machine.
Editing
We knew from the start that we wanted the sounds to be in chronological, so the biggest decision that we made when editing was how loud we wanted each of the sounds to be. We needed the background noise to keep playing the whole time so all the other sounds needed to be loud enough to be audible but not to completely drown out the speaking in the background and the music. Also, for the background noise we wanted the speech to be slightly louder than the music throughout the whole audio.
